When is Laundry Day?

Is there a better feeling than fresh sheets?

There’s truly nothing like crawling into a crisp, clean bed at the end of the day. But, more than comfort, clean sheets are essential to your hygiene and health. Over time, your sheets will collect dust mites, dead skin, sweat, body oils, and more. Not exactly cozy cuddle companions.

So, let’s dig in. How often should you actually be washing your sheets?

Sheet Sets & Pillowcases

Most experts recommend washing your sheets every 1-2 weeks. Specifically, your fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillowcases, as these are the pieces that make direct contact with your skin every night. Certain factors will change this frequency. For example, if you sweat a lot in your sleep or share your bed with pets, you will probably want to wash your sheets more often.

If you can manage it, washing your pillowcases once a week or more can be greatly beneficial whether you’re dealing with skin conditions like acne or just trying to keep a fresh face. The skin on your face is typically more sensitive than the rest of your body, so ensuring you have a clean place to rest your head is crucial.

Comforters

You probably don’t need to be washing your comforter or duvet quite as often as your sheets. The main decider will be whether or not you use a flat sheet. If your skin is making direct contact with your comforter or duvet, you’ll want to wash it along with your sheets. If you have a flat sheet acting as a barrier, you can likely get away with washing your comforter about once a month.

Ugh, this is Exhausting

We get it. Washing your sheets is kind of an ordeal. Wrestling with your flat sheet and getting tangled in your duvet can be a full-blown workout. If you’re finding it hard to go through this process every week, try taking some smaller steps to increase your wash frequency. Maybe you start washing your pillowcases and flat sheet every week and leave the fitted sheet for every other week. You could also invest in a second set of sheets or pillowcases so that you can refresh your sheets without your bedtime being tied to the wash cycle. Whatever you can manage, it’s better to make an improvement of any kind than to make no progress at all.

It’s also critical to pay attention to wash instructions. Laundering your sheets properly will ensure the fabric maintains its quality and comfort through multiple washes. And this doesn’t just apply to the sheets on your bed right now. If you’re not already, be sure to check the wash instructions before you buy to ensure the fabrication suits your lifestyle. The best bedding is the bedding that you’re actually going to wash and take care of.

Laundry is an often overlooked as an aspect of sleep health. So, if you’re not already, start working towards a more frequent wash routine and enjoy that clean sheet feeling!
